Rudders:
The stock
rudder length from the rudder stock at the top to the centre of
the blade at the bottom is 50". The Olson 40 was designed
with a “short” rudder and is prone to wipeout especially
power reaching in a breeze. As a result, a few owners have experimented
lengthening the rudder.
I
bought “Screaming O” recently and it has a Schumaker
designed carbon elliptical rudder. It measures 69” from
the rudder stock to the aft tip of the blade which is the deepest
part of the rudder. The former owner of Screaming O states that
the rudder weighs 28 pounds versus I suspect close to 100 pounds
for the stock rudder. I’m going to be moving this rudder
to my boat O'ffliction, Hull #010 in the coming months and I will
confirm its weight once I remove it from the boat. |

sell additional hulls. The campaign was unsuccessful!
